Blog #2 Building Your Connected Learning Community

After analyzing chapter 6 of the Connected Educator, I feel as if this topic had stood out to me. The chapter’s main focus was on how to build a connected learning community and the steps it takes to make this happen.
In the beginning the author had referenced how building a network for her had been a huge help with her career in education. I realized how beneficial this was to her and how it could help me in the same way. She started off by talking about how she created her network, specifically a science board called Newton. While using this she connected with a young science teacher who had taught her a lot and also several professors from universities, including a professional from Canada. She expressed how helpful it was learning new information from other people who had different experiences from
science.
The chapter gave me a quick crash course on how to create and utilize an online learning network. First, an online network consists of a few different sites that work for slightly different purposes. Some of these include blogs, note taking software, photo sharing, and electronic mailing. The purpose of an online learning network is so you can grow a community of connected learners and leaders. While using a network you are constantly learning from a diverse population of people while also opening yourself up to share your own experiences. While maintaining an online learning network, you usually have a main goal/theme that others can contribute and related to.
To set up an online learning network the chapter suggest that you first follow others within the same topic as you are creating your network to be about. This will help you get ideas and also discover even more people. While also finding others you have to take cautions of random accounts online, making sure they actually have the right interests and aren’t scams.
In my future career I aspire to be a future educator. I can definitely use online learning networks to help me in my career. Having a learning network as I begin to enter the field can benefit me a lot because I can find other experienced teachers and gain help as I learn more and more about educating students.

  1. Hi Jordyn!

This is a great discussion of the chapters contents. You summed up the main points very well. I found it interesting to learn how you, as a future educator, could use the concepts discussed. I feel as though educators can greatly benefit from having an online network. Learning new ideas and techniques from experienced teachers would be a great use of personal networks.

  2. Hi Jordyn! I too felt really connected and able to understand this chapter. I believe this is because most of us are in this stage of life of trying or are a part of some type of community. With being so we have learned and understood what it means. We have begun to see all the benefits that come out of being part of something so great. I can definitely see how an online learning network could be to your advantage in the education field. Though I do think that the learning network is not at is full potential for education yet. The only thing I would work on for next blog is when it came to how it related to you, it was very short. You didn’t really explain how it could exactly relate or work in your field of interest.
